Each flower stem is branched. The leaves are white tomentose. The purple flowers are arranged in spikes worn by the stems of 30-60 cm high. The Aspic blooms in September, often in August, but much later than the lavender. Spike lavender differs from lavender and lavandin by its larger, spatulated leaves, and a double fork on the flower spike. The bract of light violet coloured flowers are linear. Camphoraceous smell.
History:Spike lavender was also called "broad leaf lavender" or "female lavender" The spike essential oil was used as a thinner by Renaissance artists and is partly responsible for the vividness and strength of some famous paintings (Rubens for example).
