- Details and product descriptionIntroduction:
A beautiful evergreen aromatic tree. It can reach 50 m high and can live up to 2000 years. Camphor production begins when it is 25 years old, but production reaches a peak when the tree is 40 years old. It is cut down to distil the wood. Usually the tree has many branches beginning on the trunk next to the ground. The bark has a cracked look. The alternate leaves are red when young, then dark green to grey green-coloured, with three main veins shooting up from the base. Subtle white-coloured flowers (March to June), followed by small, round, crimson coloured berries.
History:Marco Polo is thought to be the first European to have seen a camphor tree in China, and noted the high value of the camphor oil. The arab merchant Sinbad in the Ninth century described the method of obtaining camphor by making incisions in trees and collecting the solidified exudate. A German abbess, Hildegarde, recommended its use under the name "ganphora" as a counter-irritant for rheumatism and inflamed joints. Camphor oil is a well-proven medicine, used in Europe from the XIIth century and then more widely from the XVIIth century. The name "Ravintsara" is a Malagasy name meaning "the tree with good leaves".
