- Details and product descriptionIntroduction:
This is a shrub up to 3 m high with evergreen leaves, which emits an incense odour. Straight, ramified, brown-reddish stalks. Opposite, tough, oval leaves, spear-shaped without petiole and a shiny dark-green colour. They have essential oil glands. White flowers with five crown petals and many stamen, which bloom in May/ June and are highly perfumed. Fruits are pulpy berries, deep blue when they reach ripeness and crowned by the persistent rests of the calyx. The myrtle wood is very hard and highly valued for lathe works.
History:Myrtle has been known since Antiquity. It was a sacred plant for Romans and Greeks, devoted to their goddesses of love: Venus or Aphrodite. Its fruit, macerated in wine (the myrtadum ), was considered a tonic for the stomach and heart. The EO from its leaves was earlier used to prepare "Angel water" which gave freshness and youth to the complexion.
