- Details and product descriptionIntroduction:
A perennial, lemon-scented tropical grass about 3 m tall that has long, narrow and pointed leaves, with a central line and sharp edges glabrous about 125 x 1.5 cm in size. It grows in dense clumps from a bulbous base. The rare inflorescence is a large loose panicle, drooping, greyish green, with crowded raceme pairs and small sessile spikelets.
History:Leaves and peeled stems where used for cooking since Antiquity. Cultivation boomed in 1880 providing essential oil used for building lemon notes. As the demand was going up, other cultivations were developped in South America, the Caribbean, Africa and Madagascar with another related species, so they are now two origins of essential oil on the market: 1) The East Indies lemongrass from Cymbopogon flexuosus 2) The West Indies lemongrass from Cymbopogon citratus
