Pelargonium comes from the Greek pelargos, "stork", an allusion to the shape of its fruit which recalls that of the beak of this wader. Geranium is derived from the Greek geranos which means "crane" also in reference to the shape of the fruit, and rosat is derived from the Latin rosatus, with rose. The Pelargonium genus consists of woody plants that are 20 to 80-cm high and grow in large rounded tufts. The leaves are green, dentated, rough, lobed and covered with glandular hairs that secrete essential oil. The irregular pink flowers are grouped in very tight umbels. The whole plant gives off a scent of slightly mentholated roses.
History:Every year, at the end of July, the town of Steinseltz (France) celebrates the geranium, the emblematic flower of floral decorations in Alsace. It existed in the wild in the ancient world but wasn’t cultivated until its arrival in Europe at the end of the 17th century. It was first introduced on the island of Bourbon (now Reunion).
