History:Eucalyptus citriodora, native to Australia is popular with perfumers as it is currently cheaper to extract the natural citronellal for commercial use than produce the synthetic variant. Natural citronellal ex citriodora is also a starting material for the production of menthol crystals, another plus factor for this previously dormant oil. In the early 1980's, plantations of E. citriodora were set up in Kenya, as a source of strong and heavy termite-resistant timber. The project has worked so successfully that they have investigated the possibility of producing the essential oil. Initial yields have been in the region of 2.2 % to 4.1%, which is comparable to Brazilian oil and the odour is quite good. Unfortunately, the citronellal content is quite erratic and local people are unwilling to take the time to control the production as they are only interested in the timber. Traditional ses : Strong ant heavy, it is very appreciated as timber wood. In Brazil, the main use of the wood is charcoal production. It is a good insect repellent, especially for coakroaches and silverfish. The gum or "kino" contains the antibiotic substance "citriodorol".
