- Details and product descriptionIntroduction:
The spearmint plant is a hardy branched perennial herb, 30 to 60 cm in height. Smooth spear-shaped opposing leaves, sharply serrated with deep veins about 5 cm long. Slender, upright, quadrangular reddish-purple stem. The spikes of lilac or pink flowers have a sweet and penetrating fragrance. It is in flower from August to September, and the seeds ripen from September to October. The differences with peppermint are leaves without a petiole, narrower flowering spikes and prominent etamins from corolla.
History:According to Ovide, Mentha comes from Mintha , the Greek name for a nymph that the jealous Persephone changed into mint. It seems that the Ancients used the Pennyroyal mint type. The Chinese praised mints for their tranquillizing and antispasmodic properties. Hippocrates considered it an aphrodisiac and Pliny esteemed their analgesic action. Greek and Roman added mint to milk to prevent spoilage and served the herb after meals as a digestive aid. Mentha spicata , called "Nanah" in arabic, is widely used in North-Africa and Middle-East to prepare mint tea. Did you know that ? : Mint is used as an insect repellent, as rats and mice intensely dislike its smell.
