- Details and product descriptionIntroduction:
Sea fennel is a succulent, glabrous perennial up to 40 cm high, woody at the foot. The whole plant is aromatic and has a powerful scent. It is well distinguished by its long, fleshy, bright-green, shining leaflets (full of aromatic juice) and umbels of tiny, white or yellowish-green blossoms. Fruit ovoid, ribbed, 1/4 inch long. The flowering period ranges from May to October in Portugal.
History:The plant has been known since Antiquity for its medicinal use (Dioscorides), which disappeared bit by bit with passing centuries. In the 1980s this plant had a renewal of popularity, essentially with the purpose of making cosmetic slimming preparations. The leaves have been used for medicinal purposes as a tonic, anti-scorbutic, carminative, vermifuge and diuretic. The use of Samphire as a condiment and pickle, or as an ingredient in a salad, is of ancient date. At one time it was sold in London streets as 'Crest Marine'. It was an important survival food for the early European settlers of Port Jackson. Pickled samphire was once so popular and saleable that men risked their necks to collect it from the cliffs. The name Samphire was formerly spelt Sampere, or Sampier, from Saint Pierre, as Herba di San Pietra (contracted to Sanpetra) is the Italian name of the plant.
