- Details and product descriptionIntroduction:
Like all lemongrasses (cymbopogons), palmarosa is an aromatic grass 2.5 meters tall that has long straight pointed leaves with a central fold and a sharp edge that gives off a rose-like fragrance. With its tall thin stems, it is part pf the large family of citronella or lemongrass. The inflorescences are linear panicles of 10-20 cm in length that turn reddish when mature (August-September). Fructification occurs in November.
History:Well known in India since ancient times, Palmarosa leaves were used to perfume bath water and to make ointments for external medicinal application to treat cuts and sores. This plant arrived in Europe in the Middle Ages via Turkey (Constantinople). Around the sixteenth century, the Portuguese began trading in Palmarosa essential oil, which it mistakenly called “essence of Indian geranium” or “Essence of Turkish geranium,” to be used to adulterate true essence of Damascus rose. Later, it became an important source of rose notes widely used in inexpensive perfumes or in soaps as a replacement for real rose essential oil.
