A herbaceous, hardy everlasting plant, 1 m high, with square and strong stem. Petiolate and dentate leaves with oval limb and prominent veins giving a characteristic embossed appearance that emits a fine lemon fragrance. Small flowers, yellowish then white or pinkish coloured (June - September) grouped in 6 - 12 at the leaves level; hairy calyx with two lips, 4 etamins. The fruit is a tetrachene, and when it reaches ripeness, it releases small shiny dark-brown-coloured seeds.
History:Its pleasant smell it is also called citronnella. Melissa means "bee" in Greek, as it is an excellent honey plant. In Antiquity, authors mentioned it but did not seem to appreciate its virtues. In the Middle Ages, it was used to perfume the inside of castles and to keep insects away. In the XVIIth century, around 1611, melissa gained fame thanks to the Carmelites, living in Vaugirard Street in Paris, who produced their famous Melissa water. This magic potion soon appeared in all home first-aid kits.
