Leaves are long and narrow, of a whitish green, silvered on both sides. The flowers are red. Fruit of the colour and shape of our olives, which is the reason why these trees are called "wild olive trees". The timber called "kedondong" is used for light construction. The resin is used locally for caulking ships, in torches, varnishes and glues. It is also commercially exported for the manufacture of medicinal ointments. The seeds are edible and the bark yields a tannin of reasonable quality.
History:Elemi was one of the aromatics used by the ancient Egyptians for the embalming process. Its name in Arabic means "as above, so below", which indicates its use in magical rituals for bringing about spiritual balance. It was used by a 17th century physician, J. J. Wecker, on the battlefield for soldiers with infected cuts and wounds.
